source:
http://www.tmuscle.com/free_online_article/sports_body_training_performance/7_exercises_from_thibs_toolbox
The fact that most lifters/athletes have a serious imbalance in their rhomboids (they're too weak) should be pretty well known to most T-Nation readers. Weak rhomboids can wreak havoc on your posture, shoulder health, and overall athletic performance.
There are several good exercises already being used across the strength training world, but I'm going to throw in my personal favorite. I feel that it's a superior movement because it combines a dynamic and an isometric action, which drastically increase rhomboid activation.
At first glance this movement seems to be pretty much like a regular parallel grip pulldown. However, there are two important distinctions:
1. You pull the bar to the chin/neck area with the elbows flared out.
2. As you pull the weight down, you aren't simply lifting the bar from point A to point B; you're actually trying to split open the handle of the parallel grip apparatus. This is the isometric portion of the movement.
Both of these techniques allow you to maximize rhomboids activation. Another important point is to keep the torso bent at a 45 degree angle. Don't swing with your lower back; start with the trunk bend and maintain the same angle during the execution of the exercise.

Moorclos Face Pull:
source: adaptation perso

Long Bar One-Arm Row
source:
http://www.tmuscle.com/readArticle.do?id=459452
If you've been reading T-mag for any length of time, you know that to fully train the back you need to perform both vertical pulling movements (pull-ups and pulldowns) and horizontal pulling exercises (row variations). Leave out one or the other and you'll always have an "incomplete" back and possibly even set yourself up for imbalance injuries.
When it comes to horizontal pulling movements, you have two free weight choices: two-handed barbell rows and one-arm dumbbell rows. Well, now you have a third option: the one-arm barbell row. This variation provides a slightly different line of pull and will add some variety to your training.
Grab a barbell and stack it with plates, but none larger than 25's. (Larger plates may impede your range of motion.) Get into a normal one-arm row position with one hand on a bench. (One knee on the bench is also an option.) Now simply perform a one-arm row using the barbell. Bring the bar up, pause for one second at the top, and then lower it under control to the starting position.

Straight-Arm Dumbbell Row
source:
http://www.tmuscle.com/readArticle.do?id=459452
Here's another unique row variation, this one from the Ice Dog himself, Coach Thibaudeau.
This exercise is very good at developing the lats. The objective is to bring the arm up and back while keeping it relatively straight. Really concentrate on your lats while doing this drill. Don't use a lot of weight as it's not needed to get the most out of this exercise. It's more important to focus on maintaining maximum back tension during every inch of every rep.

Straight-arm pulldown
http://www.tmuscle.com/free_online_article/sports_body_training_performance/the_torso_solution&cr=
This is my favourite exercise to develop the lats and teres major without involving the biceps. It consists of bringing the arms from a fully extended position in front of your face to your pelvis (while keeping the arms as extended/straight as possible). Focus on keeping the back in a neutral/anatomical position (don't bend forward).
At the low position, bring the shoulders down (scapular depression) so you'll get a better peak contraction of the back muscles. You can use a variety of grips for the sake of variation: hammer grip with a rope (first picture above) or a parallel grip bar, a pronated grip (second picture), or a supinated grip (third picture).

One-Arm Motorcycle Rowing
source:
http://www.tmuscle.com/free_online_article/sports_body_training_performance/7_exercises_from_thibs_toolbox
This has become my favorite "bodybuilding" back exercise. It's simply unparalleled when it comes to the focused development of the latissimus dorsi, with a special emphasis on the lower portion of the lats. This exercise is derived from Vince Gironda's motorcycle rowing.
I basically use the same movement pattern, but with only one arm. The unilateral aspect of the movement allows for a greater activation of the HTMUs (high threshold motor units) in the lats while also facilitating a fuller range of motion.
The trunk angle basically inhibits the participation of the rhomboids and thus focuses the effort mostly on the lats. The key points are to really get a deep stretch of the lats in the starting position and to aim for your hips with the elbow of the pulling arm

The Gunthar Row
source:
http://www.tmuscle.com/free_online_article/sports_body_training_performance/exercises_youve_never_tried_vol_19
Another killer movement from Thibaudeau. This exercise works the whole posterior chain hard. The hamstrings, lower back, glutes, and upper back all receive a powerful stimulation. As the saying goes, "An athlete is only as strong as the back of his body." So, this movement is extremely effective at improving athletic performance, posture, and strength in movements such as the deadlift and the Olympic lifts.
This one used to be a staple in the training of the former shot put world record holder, Werner Gunthar, who could power clean over 450 pounds as if the bar was unloaded and jump hurdles like an antelope!
Basically, the movement consists of performing a back extension, and at the top of the movement, rowing a barbell or dumbbells.
As you can see by the photo above, Gunthar was kinda short on material. Nowadays, we have solid back extension benches, so you won't have to have Mario hold down your ankles (apologies to his former coach, Jan-Pierre Egger)!
While a barbell can still be used, Thibaudeau does prefer to use dumbbells. You can even perform the movement unilaterally to work on trunk stabilization at the same time. The key point is to avoid trunk rotation at all costs.

Another great movement from Christiane, the woman who adores us. Honestly, she's practically a stalker. Sigh.
The combo extension pull works the whole posterior chain (hamstrings, butt and low back) as well as the arms. Just perform a back extension and a two-armed dumbbell row at the same time. Simple, effective, and if you're female, it provides the male gym-goers hours of masturbatory fantasy material. Bonus!

PENDLAY ROW
